Living in harmony in a CRAZY world

When I was a girl, I would ask my mom what she wanted for Christmas.

Her response was always the same: “Peace and quiet.”

No wonder! I was the oldest of five, and we often did not get along. My next younger sister, Nancy, and I pretty much tormented our brother Peter, and the poor guy would lash out with drastic measures like throwing a chair at us.

Then we’d tattle, and Mom’s answer was again predictive: “Go to your rooms!”

So, as a mother of four, I found myself echoing my mom as our kids raised havoc in the house. “All I want for Christmas is peace and quiet.”

But isn’t that what our hearts long for all year long? However, even in the midst of the craziness that is Christmas there is a plumb line of peace: Jesus. He came to make hearts and minds and souls straight and strong.

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27 ESV).

As we rush through our Christmas crazies, we can turn to the one who made things plumb-line straight through his gift of the cross.
