Does praying for your health work?

Years ago I was out prayerwalking shortly after my father’s death. That spiritual exercise was the one thing that was carrying me through losing my dad too early to ALS.

I was a couple miles from my parents’ home in rural Sacramento when I began having severe shin splints–so much so that I could not walk another step. I didn’t have a cell phone with me and began looking around to decide which house to approach to ask to use the phone.

Then a thought occurred to me: Pray!

So I did . . . and a couple minutes later the pain was gone.

While I know that not all prayers for healing are answered in the way we desire, we can run (or walk briskly!) to God for his help.

Prayer for Your Health

Lord, you can cancel all diseases and give us a renewed life, so I ask for healing. Your word is filled with testimonies of kings and common men whom you healed when men and women proclaimed their faith in you. I believe, Lord, that you can do all things. I know that your Word teaches that in all things you work for the good of those who love you and who are called to serve you with purpose. I will give you the glory, Lord, if you choose to restore health to me. If there is greater glory in my testimony through this suffering, I will choose to say, “Thy will be done,” Lord. No matter what, I trust that your grace will be sufficient for me during this time of difficulty, because your power will be made perfect in my weakness, and so, I invite your power to rest on me so that I may delight in my weakness. When I am weak, you will be strong in me. In Jesus’ name, amen!

–Based on Psalm 103:2-5, Romans 8:28, Luke 22:42, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
