Walking with God

The expression “walking with God” has always intrigued me. I definitely want to have that sense that God is with me and I, with him.

I’ve been prayerwalking the streets of my little town now for more than twenty years. It’d be great to have a companion, but that hasn’t worked out in many years now. Instead I sometimes picture that Jesus, my Personal Trainer in prayer, is waiting for me at my front door.

I believe there are some conditions for walking with God. The verse below follows a long series of laws about how to treat one another and about living a holy life. I don’t think God would want to walk with me if I’ve been treating others poorly and living a self-centered life. After all, God should be my center.

I love this translation from The Message:

“I’ll set up my residence in your neighborhood; I won’t avoid or shun you; I’ll stroll through your streets. I’ll be your God; you’ll be my people. I am God, your personal God who rescued you from Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians. I ripped off the harness of your slavery so that you can move about freely.” –Lev. 26:11-13

That’s largely how I pray when I walk the neighborhoods of my town–that the people will be God’s people and that he will set up residence here.

I pray that’s true for your town as well.
“I worship you, Lord God on High!”
