When life isn’t fair

One of the opportunities I learned to deal with the life-isn’t-fair issue was when I worked as the academic advisor of our small high school (also the English teacher for all juniors and seniors).
As the counselor I oversaw everything related to post-graduation plans, particularly focusing on the seniors. I planned and led College Night, Financial Aid Night, and Cash for College FAFSA Night. I worked with students in helping them find colleges and trade schools for application purposes. I coordinated a hundred or more scholarships–posting them, filing them for easy access, emailing them to all seniors and their parents, and putting them on a website. I coached them on their college and scholarship essays. Among dozens of other tasks, I organized and led the scholarship awards banquet.
As I got those scholarships through the mail or email and read through the descriptions and profile of potential winners, I often would get a mental picture of who would be an ideal recipient from among our seniors. Often I’d be sure so-and-so would get the award.
But that often wasn’t the case. The reasons perhaps varied. Many seniors never apply for scholarships. Many don’t work very hard at their applications. Some don’t understand the nuances of the organization or the purpose of the scholarship.
And sometimes the life-isn’t-fair rule applies, as my own children may have found out more than once.
“But Mom…,” they’d say.
And here’s how I’d respond: “Sometimes you don’t win something you should have. But other times you do win something that you didn’t really deserve. God will take care of you in both those circumstances.”
Ultimately, when life isn’t fair, we can know that while our universe seems to be rocking, God is still in control. He is our loving Father who sees us as his treasured possession.
As we draw closer to him, we win, no matter what has happened on earth.
