A story of another Ruth

I love the book of Ruth. It’s a story of faithfulness, a story of love, a story of personal sacrifice, a story of desperation, a story of risk, a story of redemption.

Plus, I just love the name Ruth, because I had an Aunt Ruth.

My mom’s older sister, she was born sometime in the 1910 decade. She always wore bright red lipstick and a big smile, had manicured nails and a perfect coiffure, and sported flashy clip-on earrings.

She was a study in contrasts, because she loved to get her hands in the dirt and tended an extensive rose garden in her community until she could no longer bend over.

She also was a runner, a state champ in New Jersey and East Coast contests.

And she, too, was fiercely faithful–to her athlete husband and her three sons. When all three wandered to California to seek their business fortunes, she came out to the West to spend long seasons and help them around the house.

She was the mother who followed the younger generation–as opposed to the Ruth of the Bible who followed her mother-in-law.

That is the love of God right there. He follows you. He does not poke or disturb you. He does not nag you. He does not trip you up and drag you into faith. But he is ready and willing to tend your rose thorns or run your race with you . . . until you finally turn toward him and accept his embrace.
