A holy interruption

I had a dream that interrupted my otherwise previously scheduled life.
Actually, it was a nightmare. I was on a tour bus with officials from the Sacramento area, touring a downtown redevelopment project. A slum had been transformed into beautiful houses.
However, as we approached the neighborhood, I saw children playing on porches and rooftops, completely unaware that their houses were on fire. The children were going to die, and I was the only one on the bus who saw that they were in danger.
I ran to the front of the bus and yelled at the driver, “Stop the bus! I have to get off!”
I awoke in a sweat and knew God was calling me to teach–a profession I had never considered. However, within a couple months’ time I had started a graduate credential program . . . and less than a year later I started teaching high school English.
When I read Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger in high school, I was struck with the concept that a person could influence others’ lives–serve as an interruption to their chaos or even self-destructive behavior.
I remembered that book when I awoke from that nightmare. I wanted my life to matter. I wanted to make a difference in my community. So, I taught young people for 26 years . . . and today one of those fine young people is transforming my writing office as I sit here writing this.
Jabez was such a man. He prayed God would be with him, bless him, enlarge his sphere of influence, and keep him from harm. His one-sentence prayer is a profound interruption in an otherwise innocuous list of names.
Each day we have the opportunity to interrupt others’ lives with love, encouragement, and a witness to the God we love.
Go ahead . . . interrupt someone today.
