Lesson from Beulah

It’s tough to do the right thing when everyone else is not.

However, I saw a lovely example of that when I was traveling from North Carolina to South Carolina.

In the Carolinas you not only have school zones on the streets and highways and you not only have hospital zones . . . you have CHURCH zones. Yes, really!

If you are bopping down the highway at 55 mph or 60 mph or even 65 mph, when you see the yellow, diamond-shaped sign that says CHURCH, you slow to 45. That is the church zone in the Carolinas.

This is, of course, most important on Sundays . . . and seemingly at 11:30 a.m. on Sundays, such as when I was driving through one of the church zones on my way to Charleston. I found that to be true, because apparently church gets out at 11:30, so all the cars were streaming onto the highway.

I saw a lovely example of doing the right thing when I watched an elderly woman driving a car–I called her “Beulah” because she turned out of the parking lot at Beulah Baptist Church–as she paused to let others out of their church parking lots down the highway. Bethel Baptist Church. Pleasanthill Baptist Church. St. Andrew Baptist Church. And so on . . . one after the other on a state highway as I drove south.

I admit I did have a bit of a pause of frustration in that church zone, waiting for Beulah and all the hundreds of cars streaming onto the highway. BUT! Then I remembered: ah, yes, those church people want to get somewhere, too. Naturally, they want to get to Cracker Barrel for lunch, but they also want to get right with God.

Let’s just all do the right thing . . . making way for people on their paths today. Keep Looking Up! . . . and keep looking out for others, too.
