When talk is cheap . . . or perhaps an IOU

H. Ross Perot said, “Talk is cheap. Words are plentiful. Deeds are precious.”

We’ve all been challenged to live out the words that come out of our mouths. Here are a few:

“It’s important to tithe.”

“Do not text and drive.”

“Always keep your promises.”

And then the situation comes up that seemingly is an excuse or a very good reason that turns our head from what we know is right to what seems most expedient at the moment.

Ezra faced this issue. He had finally got the go-ahead to go back to Jerusalem from captivity and was scared about the prospect of facing enemies along the way without the ability to fight them off. The Hebrews would carry precious gold and silver items to to the temple for its restoration and would have been prime targets.

But he knew this is where he had to walk his talk. Listen in:

“Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, ‘The hand of our God is for good on all who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.’ So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty” (Ezra 8:21-23).

He had told the king that God was their protector. Now the king would be watching to see if that were true.

So, what did Ezra do? He fasted and prayed.

And God listened and protected them.

Faith is not just something for me to proclaim. Others are watching to see how I live it out with integrity. It’s not easy, this faith walk of ours, but it’s good and right . . . and I’m thankful for God’s grace each step of the way.
