Weighing my words in a twittering, face-to-facing, not-always-pinteresting world

Oh my, how words can get me in trouble!

When a student once accused me in front of the class, saying I “always” lost his papers, I blew it.

I responded too quickly. “Right. I always look for your papers in the pile and then throw them away.”

Well, that just made him blow up in a rant that not only rattled the whole class but also made me have to call for help to remove him from my room.

I should have followed Nehemiah’s lead. When Persian King Artaxerxes asked him, “What are you requesting,” Nehemiah didn’t speak immediately.

Scripture tells us Nehemiah instead “prayed to the God of heaven.”

THEN he made his request: “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ graves, that I may rebuild it” (Neh. 2:5).

Look at some of the word choices here: “if” – “pleases” – “your servant” – “my fathers’ graves” – “may.” Nehemiah was weighing his words in a potentially volatile situation. If he worded something wrong, those words could cost his life and perhaps others’ lives as well.

God answered Nehemiah’s prayer and his heart’s desire. God gave Nehemiah the right words as well as favor from the king. And Nehemiah traveled back to Jerusalem and the wall was built with many, many hands.

In these crazy days of twittering, face-to-facing, not-always-pinteresting social media, may we also not quickly react to others’ comments but instead PRAY before we speak important words. Words can hurt, but words can also influence and heal and bring life into others’ lives.

So . . . and I’m preachin’ to myself here . . . let’s keep Looking Up! before we speak/write and then be a vessel for God’s good work.
