Needing a bit of joy today?

I’ve been blessed with many joyful moments in my life.
Hearing “I do.” Wow, he did?
Giving birth and holding my children for the first time.
Watching my kids walk to the podium to accept scholarships.
Seeing them walk across the stage to collect that blank diploma holder with a promise that the real thing would come in the mail. (Thank the Lord . . . it did!)
Hearing more I do’s–my own kids with their beloved.
Holding those grandbabies for the first time.
But here’s the thing. Joy is a fleeting emotion, summoned by the wonderful experience of the moment. It doesn’t last, because the moment quickly fades into hours, days, years.
The ONE THING that has brought true, lasting JOY into my life has been God’s Word: his words that rise up off the page and say, “This is for you, Janet.”
It’s a curious thing. Joy is not something I can summon. It’s God’s characteristic that somehow filters to me through the words I read daily. And those words bring strength, resilience, and determination that last through life’s valley times . . . and oh, how they seem to outnumber the wow moments. Just an annoying bill mistake could make me cranky!
But then I remember. God had a word for me today: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Just as the people relied upon God to help them rebuild the walls of torn-down Jerusalem in the midst of harassment and daily physical threats, I too can know joy from God’s promises on a daily basis and be strengthened for the tasks he has for me.
God’s joy is your strength. Believe it. Claim it. Live it . . . so others see it in you and want it, too.
