Facing our fears

A funny story today . . .

While visiting on business in the Colorado Springs area, I decided my mini-rental car and I would drive to the top of Pike’s Peak. I had heard my maternal grandmother Louise had done that, so I thought I would conquer my fear of heights and do it too.

The first part wasn’t bad, but NO ONE TELLS YOU that halfway up, the pavement disappears and you find yourself on a gravel road for the most precipitous parts.

I made it to the top, though, and was thankful for the gift shop up there, so I could buy my “I climbed Pike’s Peak” t-shirt. Yes, I was interpreting that rather loosely, but I did feel as though I had.

When I took my t-shirt to the young man at the checkout, I asked him, “So, do you ever have people who drive all the way up here . . . and can’t get back down?”

He leaned over the register and whispered, “Are you one of those people?”

“Maybe,” I said, truly wondering how I’d do going back down on that gravel road.

As the checkout guy handed me my purchase, he reassured me that I would be fine. “Just keep it in low.”

As I walked around at the top of that 14,111-foot mountaintop and looked over the forested world around me and the valley below, I understood that if God could guide me to the top, he certainly would have his hand on me as I descended.

And that’s the truth. He’s with us on those windy mountain roads, those challenges that seem impossible. He’s with us for the mountaintop experiences. And he’s with us when we’re in a descent into the valleys of our lives. And our feet . . . or mini-rental car . . . will remain secure.
