Bouncing out of that bog of discouragement

Whooeee, a big wave of discouragement about knocked me over this morning.

The kind that makes you wonder why you try so hard.

The kind that makes you just want to go back to bed.

The kind that makes you check to see if you took your HRT (hormone replacement therapy) last night.

So I did check . . . that wasn’t it. It was the whispers.

You’ll never succeed.

You’re not good enough.

Just quit trying.

But then I turned to my daily reading in the Bible: Psalms 36 and 37. There I found my encouragement. The title of Psalm 36 is “How Precious Is Your Steadfast Love,” and the title of Psalm 37 is “He Will Not Forsake His Saints.”

And within literal minutes after I had chosen to delight in God, I received an offer to be a columnist on prayer for a mom group, as well as prayers texted from friends.

When we’re wandering in the slough of our own doubts and discouragement and dragged-down despair, we need to go to the source of Truth: God’s Word.

And here’s the Truth:

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” –Psalm 37:4

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!” –Psalm 37:7

“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” –Psalm 37:23-24

So, if you also are trudging through a slough right now, I invite you to reexamine the Truth. Read a good word, keep Looking Up! . . . and bounce out of that bog.
