Life lessons for grads: My graduation speech

Congratulations, Class of 2019!

Believe in yourself and your God-given abilities. You really can do those hard things when you try.

Don’t be afraid. Face your fears. Do that thing that terrifies you. Conquer it. Then move on to the next one.

Love generously. It’s worth it. And I don’t mean romantic love. Care about people. Look them in the eye and ask them questions and engage them in conversation. Serve them. Help them. YOU will be the greater benefactor in that exchange.

Seek a life’s pursuit that will give your life joy and purpose. That may mean you will never be rich, but you will wake up in the morning excited about your day, knowing you’re making a difference for someone, including yourself.

And by all means, know that your education is not over. Keep learning. It’s a lifelong adventure. Even if you don’t go to college, read. Learn. Grow. Be better tomorrow at something than you were today. Know more tomorrow about something than you did today. It feels good.

Celebrate in healthy ways. Take a walk and notice the beauty around you. Spend time with friends who will encourage you and push you to be your best self. Listen to music that makes you happy.

And travel. Oh, yes, TRAVEL, people! I learned this lesson way too late in life. I was not confident and did not set aside money. It is so worth it to see those parts of the world and experience life from another perspective other than your own. You love people more.

And I encourage you to keep Looking Up! Pray. Read your Bible. Seek a personal relationship with God through his Son Jesus. It will make all the difference in your life.

I’m cheering for you, Class of 2019. Go commence the rest of your life . . . and do it well.

Blessings from a former English teacher!
