How I still my heart each day

I do not sit still often.
To-do lists float in my head constantly. Even in conversation with others–if I’m at home–I’m wiping the kitchen counter or straightening something.
I don’t think I’m ADHD; I just see things that need to be done and love checking those things off my mental to-do list.
This mindset trickles into my spiritual life. It’s really hard for me to sit and pray. My mind races to and fro, reminding me of all the things I think I should do.
So, my morning routine of spending time in God’s Word is critical. Here’s my process:
– I read the portion of scripture assigned for the day (I read through the Bible each year with a group called Bible Girls, which I am administering this year).
– I try to slow myself down–blocking out the pull of other things that could distract me.
– Then I intentionally look for what God needs to speak into my heart that day. What verse or verses seem to stand out? What positive idea do I need to hear that could help others?
– Looking at it over and over again, I reflect on it by thinking what it means in the context of the scripture around it.
– Then I creatively journal that verse in the wide margins of my Journaling Bible (Crossway). One finished Bible each year goes to one of my grandchildren (I’m working on #4 right now).
– As I journal, I pray as God leads my heart and mind.
– Lastly, I create a meme design to post on social media to share that good word with others.
The process of this makes me BE STILL as I meditate on the scripture each day. Reading through the Bible each year helps me see God’s faithfulness throughout the centuries and understand that my life is purposeful.
What routines do you use to read the Bible, pray, and still your heart before God? I’d love to learn from you.
