Choosing joy on a long haul day

Whooeee . . . yesterday was a full day. I drove an hour to Reno for an important errand. Then I drove two hours to a Home Depot in the Sacramento area to pick up a lawnmower. After that I drove another hour to visit with my mom . . . then three hours more to get home.

Summer means road construction here on mountain highways . . . and I had a half dozen of those encounters. While I had factored in delays at the two businesses, I had not factored in road construction.

I realized I had a choice–to enjoy the journey, despite the hassles, or to be a grouch. I chose to enjoy the beauty of the Sierras as I went up and over Donner Pass on Interstate 80 . . . and turned on positive, encouraging KLOVE radio.

It often seems as though life HAPPENS to us–as though we have circumstances that fling us here and there.

But actually we still have choices.

I can CHOOSE joy. I can CHOOSE to be productive during wait times. I can CHOOSE to notice others around me and strike up a positive conversation. I can CHOOSE to make an encouraging difference for others at the gas station, at the senior living apartments, at the McDonald’s drivethrough. And . . . also at home when I get back after a day of go-go-go.

In the quiet respite of my home today, I can also choose to keep Looking Up! . . . as I seek his purpose for my day.

Praying you do, too!
