When you need a Good Samaritan

Yesterday I saw love, grace, and hope in action.
As we live on the state highway that runs right through our little town here in the Sierra Valley, we get a lot of traffic. Our house is often a convenient stopping place for someone pulling over to use their cell phone. So, I don’t usually look to see who has stopped in front of our house.
But yesterday I heard voices after two vehicles stopped, so I walked onto the balcony outside my upstairs office and saw two men helping “Sam” up to his feet. I rushed downstairs to see if I could help. Apparently, he’d been sitting at the edge of our lawn, and his bicycle was lying down near him.
Sam is our town watchman. In his early senior years, he walks or cycles up and down Main Street all day long. I mean that: All. Day. Long. I’ve seen him as early as 6 a.m., and he’s still out and about at sunset when I’m finishing my own walk. He loves people and often engages them in conversation. A severe accident many years ago derailed his life and capacities, but he is an unofficial greeter for our town. Everyone knows Sam and calls him by name.
One of the two men picked up his bicycle and put it in his truck. The other took Sam to our little health clinic, which doesn’t have emergency services but can arrange them. I got notice to his brother, who lives nearby.
This couples-minutes vignette spelled out for me what it’s like living in a small town. People take care of people. It doesn’t matter who those people are. When you have a need, everyone is your neighbor. We all have the opportunity to be Good Samaritans and we will be, because chances are we’ve been on the receiving end more than once.
Love, grace, and hope in action. Hope right in front of us. Hope living in us.
