When I need a rescuer

We experienced God’s hand of protection Sunday.

After church we were heading on the freeway to another part of the Reno area where weekly Craig picks up feed and other materials he needs for the ranch.

After a mile or so on the freeway we heard a fluttering, and then Craig noticed the temperature gauge was all the way to the right. Then the warning light. My gray 2009 Ford Escape was heating up.

He threw on the heater full blast, but that did not seem to affect the temperature gauge. We got off at the next exit and rolled into the In ‘n’ Out parking lot. (That was convenient, huh?)
A bit of concern: I was hosting a virtual bridal shower mid-afternoon and was an hour from home.

After a nice lunch there Craig limped my car to his brother’s house, stopping a dozen or more times for the dozen or so fewer miles. It took five hours. Halfway through that time period my brother-in-law picked me up to take me to his and his wife’s house, so I could host the bridal shower Zoom gathering on their computer. It all worked out–not a life crisis, certainly.

Despite the troubles–which are still in process to get fixed–we felt cared for and blessed. Just days before we had taken a two-day trip to Lake Tahoe, a trip up and over several mountainous areas over narrow, two-lane roads. We would not have had great places to pull over had the car overheated then.

We were also grateful for warning signs: sounds under the hood, a temperature gauge, a warning light.

The whole incident gave me pause. What other warning lights have flashed in my life?

Aches and pains perhaps–warning signs that I need to watch my weight and take care of my health.

A sarcastic comment from someone–warning sign that life may be a struggle right now for that person.

I recognize that life can swing the unexpected into my life sometimes, but often there are more subtle signals that can go off to direct my attention to something I need to take care of. And I appreciate that God is always near to guide and direct my steps.
