When the power goes out

Yesterday I was in such a funk. Because of winds up to 70 mph, the power went off around 10:30 in the morning and remained off all day and into the evening.

While most others here in our mountain valley have woodstoves for their heat, we rely on electricity. People think we’re nuts, but years ago when we built the house we had an asthmatic baby boy, and his doctor recommended we not use wood heat to keep the air cleaner.

Part of my concern was, of course, the food in the fridge. I’d just bought four turkeys–three for our church’s charity drive–and just also made two huge lasagnas and two trays of enchiladas, all for our family Christmas. I needed the freezer to work.

Turn the power on, please God, I prayed.

As I went to bed, though, I listened to the rain–such a soothing sound, despite our cold home. And it occurred to me that God had indeed unleashed his power. It was pouring–a rarity for our dry high desert area.

His power through rain was putting out the fires that ignited in our area because of the winds. And his power through rain was refreshing our parched earth–even Craig’s ranch he’d worked for many months to plant.

God had turned on his power.

Yes, the electricity went back on around 1 a.m. that night, but the power had been on the whole time.
